Microsoft Windows has been a predecessor of Operating Systems and still it dominates the Operating System market. But even though it is the main OS that still runs on most of computers, it hasn't been able to fulfill some of the users' desires. Like limitations for customization and much more. And even it is vulnerable to have viruses or any malicious software. This is where Linux Operating systems comes in. Linux is programmed by Linus Torvalds and currently one of the biggest Open Source Projects available.
Who should look for a Linux OS?
Users who are fed up enough to use Windows,
Users that use old machines which new Windows OS aren't supporting,
Users that deserve a strong privacy,
AND ANYONE WHO LOVES TO EXPERIENCE A CHANGE!
What are the benefits of using Linux...
There are over 500 Linux Distributions (also known as distros) active today and you have freedom to choose any distro you would love. They all obey the principles of Open Source project.
You can have your own custom GUI
This is my GUI, Need to work more on it, but it is really lightweight and fast
I am a big LINKIN PARK fan, that's why a wallpaper was there.
There are many open source window managers and desktop environments out there that you can use to customize the user interface such as Gnome, KDE Plasma, which is pre-configured and window manager that lets you the full control to design and add widgets such as DWM, Hyprland, BSPWM, etc... . And also you can create your own widgets by using tools like conky, eww, etc... and much more you can explore.
It is Lightweight
Most Linux Operating systems are lightweight and optimized for efficiency. If you are using an old machine, Linux is a good choice because Windows's new Operating systems are not matching for old machines. Linux OS are the best to run on virtual machines due to their low resource usage and optimization.
It is secure,
Linux has an ownership based security model, means no one can modify system settings on your machine unless the person has your password. And also Linux uses SELinux and iptables like tools which give a good service on security.
Linux is Stable, that's why servers love Linux,
Linux can run for ages without requiring a reboot. That stability makes Linux the best choice for servers
Plenty of choices to try and select,
With over 500 distros, what can't you do? You can switch between distros and enjoy, and even with your own customized window managers, you can do anything...
Here are some Linux distributions,
Power of Terminal,
You can do anything by using the terminal. It makes life easier for sysadmins and developers. And a good environment for programmers due to Linux's built-in tools.
Huge community to help
Linux community has grown significantly in past few years, so no need to worry when you got an issue on Linux, you have plenty of documentations and a big community to help.
My advice before switching to Linux,
Don't switch directly to a pro-Linux distro like Arch Linux or Kali Linux because you will hate Linux as you are still a beginner to Linux. Start with Ubuntu or Debian, it will teach you the basics you need to know Linux. After using them for a year or two, you can switch to any distro as your preference.
And also, even Linux is very good on the security side, it can have viruses if you try to install a software without considering its distributor or the creator. So please be careful and know before you do something, because your freedom will sometimes lead you to destroy your OS, so be careful and enjoy freedom. In the next post we will discuss how to start with Linux...
